Training camps only been going on for about a week of days and we've already seen injuries to many players; Denver Broncos lost both Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter just 10 minutes after each other. Oakland Raiders' WR Louis Murphy suffered a concussion, Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSean Jackson was stretched off the field, as was Percy Harvin, WR for the Minnesota Vikings, and even everyone's new favourite Quarterback Tony Romo is struggling with a sore right arm.
Training Camp can make or break a season.
One injury to a key player could leave a huge gap in the team.
But it's a vital part of any season to get players up to scratch with changes to the system and for rookies to bed in the required know-how to perform in the system...injuries happen, they come with the territory.
But it's also a time for players to show their true colors. A time for them to stay away if they aren't happy with their current contract or the team that they play for...or, in the case of some rookie players, not getting enough money to sign their first NFL contract.
Won't go into that too much, but it's a time for them to show how selfish they really are. In the case of Ndamukong Suh, his contract talks with the Detroit Lions aren't going too well (possibly down to reports suggesting he wants MORE than Quarterback Sam Bradford?)
Last year we had Michael Crabtree holding out until October 7th, could it be a similar time until we see Suh on the field for the Lions...a team in desperate need of something to smile about on their defence. He holds out, he'll alienate Lions fans and they won't want him in their team - he has all the talent to make it in the NFL but he wants more money before he gets down to business.
Earth to Rookies...you've done nothing to prove yourself yet!
But even those who have done have their own disputes that they feel the need to not turn up to the team's Training Camp.
Darrelle Revis is probably the highest profiled player so far who is holding out. Protesting to the New York Jets that he wants a new contract and won't turn up 'til he gets one.
True, he is one of the best players in the league after last year. But he did sign a six-year deal when he came into the NFL and isn't happy that he will only make $1m this year...he wants to be paid more than the $4.3m that the Oakland Raiders gave to Nnamdi Asomugha last off-season.
Inevitably he will get something like that offered to him...the Jets will stand no chance of getting to where they want to be without him on the defense. But he's holding his team back by not turning up to the Training Camp and has lost $20m in guarantees salaries for 2011 and 2012 but he won't mind about that when he gets his new contract...if and when it happens.
Which it will.
But how will he cope missing a chunk of Training Camp? How will his team do without him for these sessions?
The NFL is full of selfish primadonnas who are only in it for themselves. Of course there are exceptions, but you get the feeling some are only in it for the money...whatever happened to them being part of a successful team, does that not matter to them any more?
