The Percy, Florida native, LeGarrette Blount, joins the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent after first agreeing (but not signing) to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Blount missed 8 games in his senior year from being suspended after sucker punching Boise States Byron Hout after Oregon’s season opener loss. In his junior year at Oregon, Blount totaled 137 carries for just over 1,000 yards and an Oregon best 17 touchdowns. His senior year was incomparable with 22 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns in only three games.
After agreeing to terms with the 49ers, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher called Blount and asked him to join the squad and informed him of having a legitimate chance of getting some playing time. So what does LeGarrette do? He showed up ready to work at spring camp. He entered camp at a built 6-foot, 247 pounds.
Even though Blount has been getting reps with the fourth-teamers, Fisher says that LeGarrette is working hard and really wants to make the 53-man roster. I don’t see LeGarrette getting to much playing time this year, unless he steps into short yardage plays. He seems to be a clone of former Titans running back LenDale White, who last year ran for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
So, realistically would someone be smart drafting LeGarrette to their fantasy team? Probably not. He hasn’t even earned a spot on the roster yet and he is currently running behind Chris Johnson, rookie All-American Javon Ringer and 5-year veteran Alvin Pearman. Not to mention, he’s competing for a roster spot with former USC Running Back Stafon Johnson, whose senior year was cut short by a weight lifting accident. There are many other running backs in this league that will produce more than Blount will this season.
From seeing LeGarrette run at Oregon, he does have a one thing that he needs to work on. HOLD ON TO THE BALL. In short yardage situations and times when Oregon needed to put points on the board, LeGarrette turned the ball over. If Tennessee is going to use him in goal line and short yardage plays, he is going to need to be smarter with the football.
Even though LeGarrette has the size, speed and skill to play at this level, he will need some time to adapt to this level of play and my advice for you fantasy football fanatics is to stay clear of Blount at the get-go and possibly consider picking him up in the middle of the season if Tennessee decides to use him as a short yardage back.
